AI in MarketingSEO, AEO, GEO and AIO explained by The Marketing Family

SEO, AEO, GEO, AIO. Four acronyms, one vowel apart, all fighting for space on the same slide.
If your eye twitches a little every time someone drops “GEO” in a meeting, welcome!
Let’s clear it up.

Here’s the part nobody says out loud: these aren’t four rival channels you pick between. They’re layers. SEO is the foundation. The other three are what happens to that foundation now that half your buyers ask a robot instead of typing into Google. The goal hasn’t moved. Be the answer people find and trust. The only thing that changed is where they’re looking.

One quick landmine before we start. GEO used to mean geo-targeting, the “near me” local stuff. In the AI era it means Generative Engine Optimization. Totally different beast. Moving on.

Comparison of SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO with examples

SEO: rank in the classic results

You know this one. It’s paid your bills for years. Search Engine Optimization is getting Google (and Bing, and the three people still on Yahoo) to rank your pages. Keywords, backlinks, site speed, content that doesn’t put people to sleep.

Example: a B2B SaaS wants page one for “best project management software for remote teams.”

The benefit: steady, compounding organic traffic. It’s slow, it’s a bit boring, and it still works. Don’t ditch it because a shinier acronym walked in.

AEO: be the answer, not just a result

Answer Engine Optimization is about being THE answer, not the tenth blue link. Featured snippets, the “People also ask” box, and voice assistants reading your content out loud to someone with wet hands and a flooding kitchen.

It runs on question-shaped content and FAQ schema, because people don’t type “plumber Chicago” anymore. They ask “who can unclog my drain today.”

Example: that same SaaS writes a crisp FAQ answering “what features should project management software have,” structured so Google lifts it straight into a snippet.

The benefit: you win the zero-click moment. No click, but your brand was the answer. That’s a memory you didn’t have yesterday.

GEO: get cited inside the AI’s answer

Generative Engine Optimization is about getting name-dropped inside answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. When someone asks an AI to recommend tools, GEO is the reason your brand makes the list.

The AI isn’t ranking you. It’s writing an answer and deciding who’s worth citing. You earn that with genuinely authoritative content it can parse and trust.

Example: someone asks ChatGPT “best project management tools for a 10-person agency,” and your product gets named, because your comparison guide is the clearest thing on the internet about exactly that.

The benefit: visibility where your buyers now research, often before they ever open Google. Get left out of that answer and you won’t even know you lost.

AIO: the messy umbrella

Honesty time. AIO is the one everyone argues about, because it means one of two things depending on who’s talking.

Some people use it for Google’s AI Overviews specifically, that AI-written box sitting on top of the results.

Others use it as AI Optimization, the umbrella term for showing up across every AI surface, GEO and AEO included.

Our advice: pick one definition and write it down before you plan anything, or your team will burn a whole meeting arguing about a single letter.

The benefit either way: you’re future-proofing for a world where an AI, not a list of ten links, is the thing standing between you and your customer.

The bottom line on SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO

Don’t torch your whole strategy because the acronyms multiplied. Google itself has said you don’t need special GEO or AEO tricks to show up in its AI results. Helpful, clear, structured, trustworthy content wins in all four. Always has.

Build SEO first. Layer AEO with question-based content and schema. Earn GEO with content authoritative enough to cite. Keep half an eye on AIO while the definition settles down.

It’s the same job it always was. Be the best answer wherever your buyer is looking. There are just a lot more places to look now.

Want the whole stack built and run for you, minus the part where you personally learn four acronyms? That’s literally our thing. Book a call.
